Camp Butler cemetery

On the outskirts of Springfield we found Camp Butler National Cemetery.  Camp Butler was a training camp at the start of the war and then as prisoners camps were needed starting in 1862 it was repurposed for that.  It is still an active cemetery but has Civil War dead from both sides.

Confederate dead have headstones that come to a point, Union have a curved top.

There is a small Confederate monument in the cemetery for the many dead that are there.

Next to the Confederate burials are the Union dead.
