8th Ohio Battery

8th Ohio Battery Light Artillery
Commanded by Capt. Louis Markgraf

On back of monument:
This battery of 6 guns was in action here from 5.30 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., April 6, 1862. Its loss was, 3 men wounded.

This battery was unassigned and stayed in the rear most of the first day. It formed part of the final line for Grant's forces near Pittsburg Landing. In the picture the steep slope of the river bank starts on the other side of that tree line.

  1. Ever thought about working both sides? The CSA at Shiloh is also a great store. My great great uncles and possibly my great great grandfather were in the 44th Tennessee infantry at Shiloh. I have not been to Shiloh, but look forward to going as soon as I possibly can.
