1st Kentucky Infantry USA

Kentucky had units on both sides.  For the individual units the markers look like this with a simple unit inscription.  They also placed a large state monument which is one of my favorite monuments on the battlefield.

101st Indiana Infantry

The 101st Indiana Infantry has a monument and two markers.




I didn't take a picture of the markers, just the plaque as the stone part of the marker is a large square stone, pretty nondescript.

Thomas' headquarters on Snodgrass Hill.  Since all the headquarters' monuments look the same this is one I actually did not walk down to.

8th Kansas Infantry

Kansas had one regiment at Chickamauga, the 8th Kansas Infantry.  It has one monument and two markers.

The marker is hard to read.  Missouri's marker style was to have the engraving on top of the stone.  When it was new I'm sure this looked great but over the past 100+ years the weather has turned some of these very hard to read.

Tim Smith

Tomorrow Tim Smith will be speaking at the Rocky Mountain Civil War Roundtable.  We've developed a bit of a friendship (kinda hard to be really good friends when live a thousand miles apart) over the years of Shiloh study so I'm always glad to see him.

I was reading through my new Civil War News this weekend when I happened upon an article announcing he had won the Richard Barksdale Harwell Award from the Atlanta Civil War Roundtable.  Then I noticed that below his article was my review of the book that he won for, Shiloh: Conquer or Perish.  I knew I'd written the review but it was kinda cool to reappear there again.

Congratulations to Tim, well deserved.  I look forward to seeing him Tuesday.

Heg mortuary site

I've always been interested in Hans Heg.  I've posted about him previously.  I don't have any Norwegian ancestry, as far as I know, but my family is from Wisconsin so I've always had a soft spot for Heg and his 15th Wisconsin.  Part of me has also wondered how they would have fared at Shiloh.  The other Wisconsin regiments there were the 14th, 16th and 18th so the 15th was raised at the right time, but for a variety of circumstances was not there.  From what I know Heg was a good colonel, and Chickamauga was his first test commanding a brigade, would have liked to see how he would have turned out there as well.

I operate this blog in as feast or famine, something I wish I was better about.  So I've decided to embark on a series that I know will take some time to do, but I can keep at it.  I have pictures of nearly every monument at Chickamauga (among other battlefields), so over the next several months I'll post those pictures.  Sometimes with minimal commentary, sometimes with more, just on an as needed basis as I see fit.  This series will start up next week.  Hopefully you'll join me on this journey.
